Giving in 2021: the best ways to help charities

31/08/2021

Helping charities and people across the world is more important in 2021 than it has ever been and there are simply so many ways that you can help UK charities. From participating in a digital fundraiser run, or shouting out and supporting charities online, read this blog to learn the best ways you, as an individual or a community, can make a difference.

Volunteering

One of the most useful things you can do to help out charities in 2021 is donating your time. This is quite easy for us to do, just set aside a weekend here and there or even a few hours every week, as this can make all the difference. Volunteering is the lifeblood of charities and by helping out a little in this way, you can make a surprisingly big impact as an individual.

Donate Effectively

Each charity has its own cause, helping people at home or overseas, helping children or tackling the effects of climate change and enabling the environment to thrive. Whatever cause you want to support, make sure it’s close to your heart.

Charities should be transparent about how they spend your donations and about how the charity commission process works, which can help you when deciding which charity to support. Here at Send a Cow, we are very transparent about our impact as we can tell you all about the impact of a monthly gift and exactly how your donations help others.

Participate in charity runs, events and challenges

One of the most fun and successful ways that many people across the UK raise money for charity is by participating in an event. Picking a physical feat or challenge drums up support and gets people thinking about the cause you are donating to, not to mention it is one of the most fun and engaging ways to make a difference.

One event many Send a Cow fundraising like to return to year after year is in Bath and participants are already signed up for the Bath Half Marathon. If a half-marathon seems a little intimidating don’t worry, you can also sign-up to do the 5km! If this isn’t quite your cup of tea, then why not do your own thing? You could do a Coast to Coast walk, or an egg and spoon race for the whole family, it’s completely up to you.

Digital fundraising and events

Don't want to leave your house? No problem. One positive from the various lockdowns recently is that many charities have set up socially distanced and digital ways to give back, so you can support charities from the comfort of your own home. A lovely way to give back is by hosting a virtual African coffee break. You can enrich the lives of coffee farmers in Africa while catching up with friends and family. If you’re intrigued to find out more about our work across Africa, you can also book a speaker to talk to your rotary group, church or school!

Another fantastic event to get involved in that you can easily do is the Gardens for Good fundraising event. Host a BBQ or open your garden up to raise money for Send a Cow and families grow brighter futures.

Be active on social media

You can raise awareness in so many different ways and a post on social media or engaging with charities can make a huge difference. It might not seem like a lot but social media is a powerful tool to let people know how they can also get involved and the very real difference a little bit of their time or energy can do. Don't forget to tag the charity if you mention them on social media, so they can see what you're up to. If you want to tag us in something, you'll find us at @SendaCow, on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.

Consider making a regular donation

One-off events and donations are always welcome, but if you feel you don’t have the time or you want to regularly give, then you can give a monthly gift. Whichever donation you pick, you will see the direct impact of this and know exactly what your monthly gift is going towards.

Another meaningful way to make a difference is to give as you live. Whenever you spend money shopping online at stores like Sainburys, M&S, eBay, ASOS and many more stores, a little bit will go towards your chosen charity.

Swap to Fairtrade Products

Thinking about the products we use every day can help us to recycle and minimise our impact on the environment and swapping to Fairtrade products is also another great step. Reducing the plastic carrier bags we use and opting for reusable items is a positive difference. Fairtrade gifts and items come in all shapes and sizes from decorative pin badges to t-shirts and reusable canvas bags you can use for your shopping.
